“One Mexican resort is just like another, " some say.  "Lots of sand, sun and greasy bodies.   At first glance Manzanillo may seem to fit that ddescription, but it is much more than just a day at the beach.  To understand the appeal of Manzanillo you need to know that it is located in the State of Colima, Mexico's fourth smallest state, whose attractions range from colonial history to geological wonders like active volcanoes, to natural settings from jungles to rain forests, as well as, to five star resorts offering excellent cuisine and beautiful beaches.  But, foremost, you must understand that Manzanillo's greatest treasure is its people.

Manzanillo Ecotourism Spotlight

Manzanillo is much more than five-star resorts and beautiful beaches although it has plenty of those what Travelscope loves most about the area is that it offers an opportunity to discover Mexico's natural beauty, people and culture.

Cutyutlán is located 62 km east of Manzanillo by Federal Highway 200 in the State of Colima, Mexico.  Many people love to enjoy the village's most popular pastimes strolling the quiet streets and relaxing in a lounge chair at one of the oceanfront cafes. In the months of April and May the high tide season you can suft the huge "Ola Verde" "Green Wave."

The Cuyutlan Turtle Sanctuary is home to numerous turtles of all ages and salt and fresh water turtles. The facility educates visitors and locals, preserves water habitats and protects endangered reptiles, including several turtle species, green iguanas and crocodiles.

If unprotected, natural predators eat turtle eggs and poachers sell them as aphrodisiacs. The staff collects and incubates reptile eggs, and then raises the young. During certain times of the year the visitor can participate in the release of baby turtles into the crashing surf.

In addition to enjoying the turtle sanctuary guests can also take a boat tour of the Cuyutlan Lagoon. Those who catch the first boat out, which leaves around 10 a.m. usually get to see a variety of water birds, eagles, hawks, turtles and the occasionally crocodile.
