Desert Ecotourism Spotlight
The Colorado River, its marshes and wetlands and the Sonoran Desert provide habitat for many species of birds and animals
the Hila Woodpecker, Canyon Wren, Desert Bighorn Sheep and more populate thousands of acres of wilderness.
Attendees to the Birding
and Nature Festival traverse the deserts, marshes, lakes and rivers in search of their photogenic prey. Some excursions cross the border into Mexico and visit archaeological sties
it is truly for more than the birds that people come.
Immediately to the north of Martinez Lake is the Imperial National Wildlife refuge that encompasses 25,125 acres and fronts both sides of the Colorado River for 30 miles. The refuge is a stopover for migratory birds, with some 235 species of all types spotted over the years.
The Refuge protects wildlife habitat along 30 miles of the lower Colorado River in Arizona and California including the last unchannelized section before the river enters Mexico.
The river and its associated backwater lakes and wetlands are a green oasis, contrasting with the surrounding desert mountains. More than 15,000 acres of Imperial National Wildlife Refuge is designated as wilderness. Wilderness is protected to ensure that nature, not people is the the primary influence on this quiet, scenic place.
Travel to Martinez Lake is easy. Take Highway 95 north approximately 22 miles. Turn left onto Martinez Lake Road, go 10 miles and follow the sign.
