>SEASON I PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
Brittany, France

Elves and dragons, maids and knights hiking and biking, oysters and crepes these are some of the surprises and pleasures Joseph discovers in Brittany, France the Celtic land of myths and legends.

As you would expect in a region enamored with its history and legends, Brittany is filled with historic towns in fact, there's even an official classification Cities of Art and History that is approved by the Ministry of Culture. A sub-species is Small Towns of Character and it's into that category that many of the region's picture postcard towns fall. The cultural arts and crafts of Brittany are evidenced in the traditional dress including the more than 1,200 varities of headdresses worn by women at festivals. King Arthur and the Holy Grail is one of the world's most enduring legends and it all began in Brittany. It is in the Forest of Broceliande that King Arthur received the sword Excalibur and the fairy Viviane fell in love with and imprisoned Merlin. The dense forest surrounds the lakeside village of Paimpont where more than 50 kilometers of hiking trails may lead to magical happenings!

Brittany Ecotourism Spotlight

There is a nature side to Brittany's attractions. The Finistere coast encompasses the far west area of the region and specializes in ocean battered cliffs and wind-swept headlands and the region's finest seafood. At the Pointe du Raz the land ends in dramatic vistas.

Situated at the bow of Brittany, the Pointe du Raz is one of the most striking sites of the Atlantic coast. It is named after the Raz de Sein, the dangerous stretch of water between it and the island of Sein. The millenniums have shaped it into a natural scenery open to dreams and imagination. But the marks left by its numerous admirers eventually spoiled it.

In order for the site to regain its original beauty, a vast program of rehabilitation has been launched, the objectives of which being the disappearance of unwanted buildings and the re-growth of traditional cliff vegetation. A new complex offers a quality reception to visitors, 1,000 parking spaces carefully hidden behind low walls. The Heritage Centre, is fully equipped with a video room and an exhibition hall to inform and educate the public. Thanks to the partnership with the Gaz de France Foundation, a natural gas operated bus ensures a shuttle service to the Point. A guides' service is also available.
